RLC Challenge

RLCIn the summer of 2009, Rachel came up with an idea which at the time was entitled “The Lakeland Challenge” (both Julia and Debbie thought this would be a version of supermarket sweep!).  However, it seems that the challenge was going to be to climb 10 peaks in the Lake District, in one day.

Yes, that’s 10 peaks in 12 hours.

Why on earth would we do this?

We wanted to find something that would:

  1. Challenge us individually
  2. Give us an opportunity to work together as a team
  3. Focus our fitness goals

In addition, it was always our intention to raise funds for charity through the challenge.  Sadly the son of a close friend of the business was very seriously wounded in Afghanistan.  He underwent medical treatment and extensive rehabilitation but we felt it was appropriate to divert all our fundraising efforts to support the wonderful charity Help for Heroes (www.helpforheroes.org.uk).

Did we do it?

RLCThe Challenge date was the Saturday 17 July 2010.  We are delighted to report that despite truly appalling weather conditions we managed seven on the ten planned peaks in 11 hours and 30minutes on the fells.  This included Great End, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike, Lingmell, Great Gable and Haystacks.  In total 26km of walking and climbing with a total ascent of 5,651ft and descent of 5,678ft.

Understandably the weather significantly slowed us down, particularly on the descents over extremely wet and slippery rocks and paths and safety ultimately prevailed over the remaining three peaks. We have created a gallery of photos so please do have a look and imagine the driving rain and 45mph winds.

We want to say a very big thank you to all who supported us both financially and emotionally.  We are all very proud of our achievement.  Of course this is only the RLC Challenge 2010 so who knows what we will come up with in 2011 …
